A fitted sheet fails in one of two places: the elastic gives up, or the seam opens. Neither shows up in a photo, and both are decided before the first stitch.
The elastic
Elastic is specified by width and by the force it holds at a given stretch. Suppliers often quote only the width, which tells you almost nothing.
- Ask for the width and the elongation at break. A narrower band with a higher elongation holds better than a wide band that has gone slack.
- Ask how the elastic is attached. Folded and stitched into a channel protects the band and lasts longer than a simple overlock, at a small cost difference.
- Ask for the number of corner anchors. Corners take the load; if the elastic is only run around the hem, the corners are where it lets go.
The seams
- Stitch density. Too few stitches and the seam opens under tension. Ask for stitches per inch or per centimetre, and check the sample against that number.
- Thread. A high-tenacity thread costs pennies more per unit and is the difference between a sheet that survives 50 washes and one that does not.
- Seam type. A flat-felled seam is stronger and sits flatter than a plain overlock. For a fitted sheet, this is usually worth the small uplift.
The test that settles it
Take two samples. Wash one fifty times at the temperature on your care label, then compare the elastic recovery and the seam integrity against the control. Measure the corner elastic force before and after. This is a thirty-minute test that prevents the most common return reason in the category.
Where we sit
We will tell you the elastic width, the elongation, the stitch density and the seam type in writing with the quotation, and we will run the wash test on a sample before you commit to a production run.
