Certification Costs What They Buy

Certifications are quoted as a single line in a supplier conversation and understood as a quality signal. In practice they are three different things with three different costs, and only one of them is worth paying for by default.

The three things people call a certification

  • Product testing. A laboratory report on a specific fabric lot — composition, colour fastness, shrinkage, and whatever the destination market requires. This is the one that actually protects the buyer.
  • Factory audit. A social or process audit of the manufacturing site. It tells you about working conditions and management systems, not about the product in the carton.
  • Management system certification. An ISO-style certificate for a process. Useful for tenders, largely irrelevant to whether the stitching holds.

What each one costs, roughly

The cost depends on scope and on how many lots are covered. The important question is not the headline number but the coverage: a test report for one lot does not cover the next order, and a factory audit is a snapshot that expires.

Questions that separate substance from decoration

  • Which specific test, to which standard, on which lot? A certificate without a lot reference may not cover what you are buying.
  • Who holds the certificate — the factory or a trading intermediary? The name on the report matters when you need to rely on it.
  • When does it expire, and what does re-testing cost?
  • If the fabric is substituted, does the certificate still apply? Usually not.

Where we sit

We will tell you which test reports we hold for a given fabric before you commit, and which we do not. If your market requires a test we do not have, we will tell you that too, and quote the testing rather than implying the paperwork already exists.

That is a less comfortable answer than a certificate with a logo on it. It is also the answer that survives your first customs inspection.
